The back-Shu point that speaks directly to the body's deepest root. Guanyuanshu (BL-26) reaches down to the lower abdomen and the Kidneys, supporting the original Yuan Qi, easing the lower back, and restoring order to the urogenital system.
Contraindications
Guanyuanshu (BL-26) is a safe lumbar point used routinely in practice. Keep to the recommended depth and use clean technique.
Name & story
The name 关元俞 Guanyuanshu means roughly "Gate of the Origin Back-Transport point". 关元 Guanyuan is the famous front point Ren-4 — the "Gate of the Origin" — which sits on the abdomen directly in front of this point and is one of the great reservoirs of original Yuan Qi in the body. 俞 Shu simply means "to transport" or "to pour". So Guanyuanshu is the back door that opens onto the same treasury: it brings Qi directly to the region of the original Yuan Qi, the deepest source of life stored in the lower abdomen and Kidneys. The name tells you what the point does before you even needle it.
Point family & character
Guanyuanshu (BL-26) belongs to the Bladder Meridian (BL). It is a back-Shu point — a transporting point on the back that directly communicates with the organs and the vital substances of the lower abdomen. It sits in the lumbar region, in the neighbourhood of powerful points such as Shenshu BL-23 (the Kidney back-Shu) and Dachangshu BL-25 (the Large Intestine back-Shu).
Five-element dynamics
The Bladder Meridian (BL) runs the full length of the back and carries all the back-Shu points — each one a window into a different organ or vital region. Guanyuanshu opens onto the lower abdomen, the seat of original Yuan Qi and the Water element's domain. Water governs the Kidneys and the Bladder, the will to live, and the deep reserves of vitality. When this point is activated, it is as if the back door of the body's deepest storehouse is gently opened, letting warmth and nourishment flow in to revive what has grown cold, weak or depleted.
Location
Find the spinous process of the 5th lumbar vertebra (L5). Move 1.5 Cun outward from the lower edge of that process, on either side of the spine. The point sits just above the sacrum, level with BL-25 one segment above and BL-27 one segment below.
Anatomy & fascia
The point lies in the lumbar region, in the muscles of the lower back alongside the lumbar spine.
Needling
The needle is inserted perpendicularly (straight in).
Safe depth
0.8–1.2 Cun.
Moxa, cupping & Tui Na
Moxa is well suited to this point, especially when there is Cold or Yang Deficiency in the lower abdomen or Kidneys — gentle warming with a moxa stick can deepen the tonifying effect. Cupping over the lumbar region and massage (Tui Na) of the lower back are also commonly used alongside needling.
Functions
Tonifies and warms the original Yuan Qi; Supports the Kidneys and strengthens the lower back; Regulates the lower abdomen and urogenital system; Resolves Dampness in the lower Burner; Relieves lower back pain.
Indications
Lower back pain and lumbar stiffness, especially when linked to Kidney weakness or Cold. Urinary difficulties — dysuria, urinary retention, or urinary incontinence. Disorders of the lower abdomen: abdominal pain, distension and bloating, borborygmus, diarrhoea. Weakness and fatigue rooted in deficiency of original Yuan Qi. Urogenital weakness in both men and women.
Mind & spirit (Shen)
The lower abdomen — the region this point serves — is where the Kidneys store the Jing, the essence that underpins our deepest vitality and will. When Jing and original Yuan Qi are depleted, a person may feel not only physically weak but also lacking in drive, courage and the simple will to keep going. By nourishing this root, Guanyuanshu quietly supports the foundation on which a settled, purposeful life is built.
Point combinations
With Shenshu BL-23 — to strengthen the Kidneys and support the lower back. With Pangguangshu BL-28 — to regulate the Bladder and address urinary disorders. With Dachangshu BL-25 — for lower abdominal complaints including diarrhoea, constipation and bloating. With Ren-4 (Guanyuan) — the front-back pairing that powerfully tonifies the original Yuan Qi of the lower abdomen.
Clinical spotlight
What makes Guanyuanshu (BL-26) particularly interesting is its direct correspondence with Ren-4 (Guanyuan) on the abdomen — the two points face each other across the body like front and back doors to the same room, the treasury of original Yuan Qi. Clinicians often use this front-back pairing for deep deficiency of the lower Burner, combining both points to encircle and powerfully supplement the body's fundamental reserves. It is a point that is easy to overlook among its famous lumbar neighbours, yet its specific link to the original Yuan Qi gives it a depth that few other back-Shu points can match.
The golden tip
For everyday lower back tiredness or a sense of weakness in the lower body, gentle self-massage of the lumbar region — including the area around BL-26 — can be warming and supportive. Place both palms on the lower back and rub briskly up and down until warmth is felt, then rest the hands over the area. Applying a warm heat pack to the lower back around this point is also a simple and pleasant home remedy, especially helpful in cold weather or when fatigue is at its worst.
