A quiet but precise point on the forehead, just above the eyebrow. Meichong (BL-3) clears the head, opens the nose and calms a restless mind — small in fame, reliable in practice.
Name & story
The name 眉冲 Meichong means something like "Eyebrow Rushing" or "Eyebrow Surge" — 眉 (méi) is the eyebrow, and 冲 (chōng) carries the sense of surging, rising, or rushing upward. The image is of the Qi of the Bladder Meridian (BL) rising up from the inner corner of the eye and surging forward along the brow line to reach this point. It sits just above the inner tip of the eyebrow, right where that upward momentum seems to pause and collect.
Point family & character
BL-3 belongs to the Bladder Meridian (BL), one of the great Yang meridians of the body, which begins at the inner eye and travels up and over the entire scalp before descending the back and legs. Meichong is one of the forehead points along this upper course of the channel.
Location
Find the inner corner of the eyebrow — the point sits directly above it, just at or just inside the hairline, 0.5 Cun inside the hairline. It is also described as 0.5 Cun lateral to GV-24 (Shenting), directly above BL-2.
Anatomy & fascia
The point lies on the forehead, in the frontalis muscle, at the hairline.
Needling
The needle is inserted horizontally (flat along the skin), directed either upward or downward along the scalp.
Moxa, cupping & Tui Na
Gentle finger pressure or light massage along the brow line and forehead can complement this point. Warming techniques are used cautiously on the head.
Functions
Clears Wind and relieves the head; opens the nose and clears the nasal passages; calms the Shen and settles the mind; brightens the eyes.
Indications
Headache, especially frontal headache; nasal congestion, rhinitis, blocked or runny nose; dizziness and vertigo; eye disorders and visual disturbance; epilepsy.
Mind & spirit (Shen)
Because the Bladder Meridian (BL) passes over the crown of the head and connects with the brain, the forehead points along its path — including Meichong — have a gentle quieting effect on the Shen. When Wind or rising Yang disturbs the head and the mind becomes restless, agitated or foggy, BL-3 can help settle that upward turbulence and restore a sense of mental clarity and calm.
Clinical spotlight
BL-3 is one of a cluster of Bladder Meridian (BL) points that travel across the forehead just inside the hairline. Though it is not among the most frequently used points in daily practice, it is valued specifically for frontal headaches, nasal problems and dizziness — conditions where the Qi of the channel needs to be moved or cleared in the upper part of the head. Its location directly above the inner brow makes it easy to locate and easy to reach with a transverse scalp needle.
The golden tip
For a frontal headache or a blocked nose, try pressing gently with your fingertip just above the inner tip of your eyebrow, right at the hairline. Hold for a minute with slow, steady pressure. This simple acupressure can help ease the sensation of heaviness or congestion in the forehead.
