The quiet guardian of the lower gate. Baihuanshu (BL-30) works deep in the sacral region to regulate the lower body — easing pain in the lumbar and sacral area, clearing Dampness and Heat from the lower Jiao, and supporting the urogenital and reproductive functions.
Name & story
The name 白环俞 Baihuanshu carries a poetic image: 白 (bái) means white or pure, 环 (huán) means a ring or hoop, and 俞 (shū) marks it as a Back-Shu point. Together the name evokes a 'white ring' — a circle of purity — suggesting the point's role in clearing and purifying the lower body, particularly the organs of the lower Jiao enclosed within the bony ring of the pelvis. It is as though the point tends a gate, keeping what passes through it clean and regulated.
Point family & character
BL-30 belongs to the Bladder Meridian (BL) and sits on the posterior sacrum, the last of the classic Back-Shu points along the inner Bladder line. As a Back-Shu point of the sacral region, it has a direct influence on the organs and structures of the lower Jiao.
Five-element dynamics
The Bladder Meridian (BL) belongs to the Water element, and its long sweep down the back and legs gives it a deep relationship with the Kidneys and the lower body. BL-30 sits at the very base of this channel's inner branch — at the level of the sacrum, close to where Water energy gathers and drains. Its position makes it a natural point for clearing what has pooled and stagnated in the lower body: Dampness, Heat, and Cold that obstruct the pelvis and sacral region.
Location
BL-30 is found on the sacrum, 1.5 Cun lateral to the midline, at the level of the fourth sacral foramen (S4). It sits between BL-29 above and the lower sacral points, on the inner Bladder line of the back.
Anatomy & fascia
The point lies in the sacral region, over the posterior surface of the sacrum, in the area of the gluteal musculature.
Needling
The needle is inserted perpendicularly.
Safe depth
0.8–1.2 Cun.
Moxa, cupping & Tui Na
Moxa is well suited to this point, especially when the presentation involves Cold or Cold-Dampness in the lower Jiao — warming the sacral area can bring considerable relief. Cupping over the sacral region is also commonly used alongside needling for lumbar and sacral pain.
Functions
Regulates the lower Jiao and benefits the lumbar and sacral region. Clears Dampness and Heat from the lower body. Supports urogenital and reproductive function. Eases pain and stiffness in the sacrum, lumbar spine and buttocks.
Indications
Pain and stiffness in the lumbar and sacral region. Heaviness, weakness or aching in the legs. Urinary difficulty or irregularity. Vaginal discharge (leucorrhoea), especially when associated with Dampness. Disorders of the lower reproductive organs. Constipation or difficulty with bowel movements related to lower Jiao dysfunction.
Point combinations
With BL-23 (Shenshu) — to strengthen the lower back and support Kidney function. With BL-28 (Pangguangshu) — to regulate the Bladder and clear Dampness from the lower Jiao. With GB-30 (Huantiao) — for pain radiating into the buttock and leg, sciatica-like presentations.
Clinical spotlight
BL-30 is a reliable local point for sacral and lumbar pain, and its position on the inner Bladder line gives it a broader regulatory influence over the lower Jiao. It is particularly valued when Dampness — whether Cold-Damp or Damp-Heat — has settled into the pelvic region, causing heaviness, discharge, or urinary irregularity. Its combination with neighbouring sacral Bladder points creates a powerful local treatment for deep sacral pain and pelvic disorders.
The golden tip
Self-massage or gentle pressure in the sacral area — either side of the lower spine — can help ease stiffness and heaviness in the lower back. A warm compress or heat pack applied to the sacrum is especially soothing when there is a sense of coldness or heavy aching in the area. This is a region that benefits greatly from warmth and movement, so gentle walking or hip-opening stretches can complement treatment.
