The Hall of the Shen — BL-44 (Shentang) is the point on the back that shelters the Heart and calms the mind. When anxiety, restlessness and emotional turbulence settle into the chest and the spirit feels unsettled, this quiet point on the upper back offers refuge.
Name & story
The name 神堂 Shentang means "Hall of the Shen" — or, beautifully, "Spirit Hall". A hall is not just a room; it is a place of gathering, of stillness, a space where something precious is kept safe. In Chinese medicine the Shen — the spirit, the mind, the spark of consciousness — resides in the Heart. And BL-44 sits directly beside BL-15, the Shu back point of the Heart, like a quiet anteroom guarding the chamber within. The name tells you everything: this point tends the dwelling place of the spirit.
Point family & character
BL-44 belongs to the Bladder Meridian (BL), which carries the entire row of back-Shu points along the spine. It sits on the outer Bladder line, 3 Cun lateral to the midline, at the level of the 5th thoracic vertebra (T5) — directly beside BL-15 (Xinshu), the back-Shu point of the Heart. BL-44 is the point of the outer line that corresponds to the Heart's back-Shu, and it shares in that resonance with the Heart and the Shen.
Five-element dynamics
The Heart belongs to the Fire element, and the Shen is its most precious expression — the flame of awareness and feeling that makes us who we are. When Fire is disturbed — by Heat, by emotional shock, by exhaustion — the Shen loses its quiet home and restlessness, insomnia and anxiety follow. BL-44, sitting beside the Heart's own back-Shu point, acts like a steadying hand on the door of that inner hall. It does not force stillness; it creates the conditions for the Shen to return to its rightful resting place.
Location
Find the lower tip of the shoulder blade (scapula) — that is roughly T7. Count up two vertebrae to T5. BL-44 lies 3 Cun lateral to the lower edge of the T5 spinous process, on the inner border of the scapula. It sits directly beside BL-15 (Xinshu), which is at 1.5 Cun from the midline at the same level.
Anatomy & fascia
The point lies in the upper back, over the trapezius and rhomboid muscles, at the level of the 5th thoracic vertebra.
Needling
The needle is inserted obliquely, angled slightly toward the spine. Because the lungs lie beneath, the needle must not be directed straight in or too deeply.
Safe depth
0.5–0.8 Cun, obliquely.
Moxa, cupping & Tui Na
Gentle Moxa suits this point well when there is Cold, Yang Deficiency or deep emotional exhaustion. Cupping on the upper back around BL-44 can ease chest tightness and emotional constriction. Acupressure and gentle massage here are safe and calming for home use.
Functions
Calms the Shen and settles the Heart; relieves anxiety and emotional restlessness. Opens the chest and moves Qi Stagnation in the chest. Benefits the Heart and supports the upper back.
Indications
Anxiety, restlessness, palpitations, insomnia and disturbed sleep. Emotional distress, agitation and unsettled feelings. Stiffness, pain and tension in the upper back between the shoulder blades. Tightness and oppression in the chest. Cough and difficulty breathing related to emotional tension.
Mind & spirit (Shen)
BL-44 is, above all else, a point for the spirit. When the Shen is rattled — by shock, grief, long-term worry or simply the accumulated weight of a difficult life — the chest tightens, sleep becomes shallow and the mind will not quiet down. This point, sitting like a gentle guardian beside the Heart's own back gate, invites the Shen back in. It does not sedate; it shelters. Patients who carry their emotional life as a knot between the shoulder blades will often feel a remarkable softening here — both physical and emotional at once.
Point combinations
With BL-15 (Xinshu) — the classic pairing, back-Shu and outer companion together, to calm the Heart and settle the Shen deeply. With Ren-15 (Jiuwei) or Ren-14 (Juque) — front and back working together to open the chest and ease palpitations and anxiety. With HT-7 (Shenmen) — to quiet the mind and support sleep. With PC-6 (Neiguan) — to open the chest, ease palpitations and calm emotional turbulence.
Clinical spotlight
What makes BL-44 quietly remarkable is its name itself — in a system where every point name carries meaning, being called the "Hall of the Shen" is a high distinction. Clinically, it is reached for whenever emotional life has made itself felt in the body: the tight chest, the sleepless nights, the anxiety that has nowhere to go. Because it is on the back, it is naturally paired with Heart channel and Pericardium points on the front and arms, creating a front-back conversation that surrounds and steadies the Heart from all sides.
The golden tip
If tension and emotional heaviness tend to gather between your shoulder blades, this is a wonderful spot to have a trusted person apply gentle, steady pressure. Find the area 3 Cun out from the spine at the level of the 5th thoracic vertebra (roughly at the inner border of the shoulder blade, two vertebrae above its lower tip). Firm, slow pressure or gentle massage here for 1–2 minutes, especially before sleep, can ease chest tightness, quiet the mind and ease the transition into rest.
