The great opener of the Yang Motility vessel. Shenmai (BL-62) calms the mind, clears the head, and moves Qi and Yang through the body's outer pathways — an essential point for epilepsy, insomnia, headache, and pain anywhere along the Bladder channel.
Contraindications
Shenmai BL-62 is a small, peripheral point on the foot and is generally very safe. Keep to the stated shallow depth and use clean technique. No special contraindications are recorded in the classical sources.
Name & story
The name 申脉 Shenmai is often translated as "Extending Vessel" — a name that speaks directly to its role as the opening point of the Yang Motility vessel (Yang Qiao Mai), one of the eight Extraordinary vessels. To "extend" here carries the sense of stretching open, spreading outward, and activating — much like a river gate being lifted to let the current flow freely. The character 申 also evokes the idea of expression and upward-outward movement, which matches beautifully with what the point does: it opens, moves and regulates the Yang pathways of the body.
Point family & character
Shenmai BL-62 belongs to the Bladder Meridian (BL). Its most defining character is that it is the Confluent point (opening point) of the Yang Motility vessel (Yang Qiao Mai) — the Extraordinary vessel that governs the Yang aspect of movement, posture, and wakefulness. It is also listed among Sun Si-miao's Ghost points, a classical group of thirteen points used historically for serious mental and spirit disorders.
Five-element dynamics
The Bladder Meridian (BL) is the great Yang channel of Water — the longest channel in the body, running from the inner corner of the eye all the way down the back and leg to the little toe. At the foot, Shenmai BL-62 opens directly into the Yang Motility vessel, a pathway that travels up the outer side of the body and carries Yang Qi upward to the head and eyes. When Yang Qi is stuck or disturbed — rising rebelliously to cause headache and mania, or failing to circulate properly to cause weakness and cold in the limbs — this small point at the ankle becomes the key that unlocks the whole Yang outer pathway.
Location
Find the bony prominence of the outer ankle bone (lateral malleolus). Shenmai BL-62 sits approximately 0.5 Cun directly below it, in the small depression just behind the peroneal tendons. It is easy to feel as a slight hollow when you press just beneath the ankle knob on the outer foot.
Anatomy & fascia
The point lies on the lateral side of the foot, in the depression just below the lateral malleolus, posterior to the peroneal tendons.
Needling
The needle is inserted obliquely, directed inferiorly (angled downward).
The golden tip
For a headache, stiff neck, or ankle soreness, find the small hollow just below the outer ankle bone — that is Shenmai BL-62. Press it firmly with your thumb for one to two minutes on each foot. It can also be gently warmed with a heat pack or moxa stick, which is especially soothing when the area feels cold and stiff. For those who have trouble staying asleep or who feel wired and restless at night, pressing both BL-62 and its partner point Zhaohai KID-6 (just below the inner ankle) together before bed is a traditional home remedy worth trying.
