The most hidden and foundational point on the body. Huiyin (CV-1) sits at the very root of the torso — the perineum — where the deepest currents of Yin meet. It is a point of emergency, of extreme conditions, and of profound energetic significance in both clinical practice and qigong tradition.
Name & story
The name 会阴 Huiyin means "Meeting of Yin." It is a name that tells you exactly where you are and what is happening there. The perineum is the lowest, most hidden, most protected place on the body — the deep, dark floor of the trunk, where yin gathers. Here, three of the body's most powerful vessels — the Conception Vessel (CV), the Governing Vessel (GV), and the Penetrating Vessel — all meet in one point. And just above it on the front surface runs the Conception Vessel (the great Yin channel), while just behind it, the Governing Vessel rises up the spine. The name is fitting: this is where Yin converges before Yang ascends.
Point family & character
Huiyin (CV-1) is the first point on the Conception Vessel (CV) — and also the point where the Conception Vessel, the Governing Vessel (GV), and the Penetrating Vessel all intersect. It is a point of intersection of extraordinary vessels rather than a standard five-element or command point. Its relationship to Baihui DU-20 — the highest point, where all Yang gathers at the crown — is profound: Huiyin CV-1 is its exact opposite, the lowest point, where all Yin meets at the root.
Five-element dynamics
In Chinese medicine, the body has a great axis — from the deepest Yin at the root up to the brightest Yang at the crown. Huiyin CV-1 is the very bottom of that axis, the foundation upon which everything above rests. This is the point from which the Governing Vessel begins its long ascent up the spine to Baihui DU-20 at the crown of the head. In qigong, the "small heavenly circuit" — the circulation of Qi through the two great vessels — passes through this point. Qi is gathered in the lower dantian (cinnabar field), directed to Huiyin CV-1, then guided to Changqiang DU-1, and from there up the spine to the crown and back down. The point is therefore not just a clinical location but a landmark in the body's inner energetic landscape.
Location
Huiyin (CV-1) is located on the perineum — the soft region between the anus and the genitals. In men, it is midway between the anus and the root of the scrotum. In women, it is midway between the anus and the posterior commissure of the vulva. It is the lowest point of the trunk's midline.
Anatomy & fascia
The point is located in the perineal region, between the anus and the external genitalia.
The golden tip
This point is not suitable for home needling under any circumstances. For those with an interest in its energetic significance, the traditional qigong practice of bringing gentle, focused awareness to the perineum during deep breathing — without any external pressure or stimulation — is the appropriate home approach. Those experiencing symptoms in this region should consult a qualified practitioner.
