The navel point — the very centre of the body and the first gateway of life. Shenque (CV-8) is the great warming and rescuing point of the Conception Vessel (CV): it restores Yang, drives out Cold, and reconnects the body to its deepest vitality. It is almost never needled — but warmed with Moxa, it is one of the most powerful points in all of Chinese medicine.
Name & story
The name 神阙 Shenque means "Palace of the Shen" or "Gateway of the Spirit". 神 Shen means spirit or consciousness; 阙 Que means a palace gate or a royal watchtower — the grand entrance to something precious. The navel was seen as the first door through which life enters: before birth, it is through the umbilical cord that the foetus receives everything — nourishment, warmth, the very Qi of existence. After birth, the gate closes, but the memory of that original connection remains. In Chinese medicine, the navel is therefore a place of profound depth — a direct passage to the Yuan Qi, the original vitality inherited from one's parents. To warm this point is, in a sense, to rekindle the flame at the very root of life.
Point family & character
Shenque (CV-8) belongs to the Conception Vessel (CV), the great Yin channel that runs up the midline of the front of the body. It is an extraordinary point — it has no equal for rescuing collapsed Yang and restoring consciousness in critical states of cold collapse. It is not classified under the standard five-phase point categories, but its clinical importance places it among the most essential points on the entire body.
Five-element dynamics
The navel sits at the very centre of the body — equidistant between heaven and earth, between the upper and lower, between the exterior and interior. In Chinese cosmology, the centre belongs to Earth, and Earth is the element of transformation and nourishment. The Spleen and Stomach, the organs of Earth, govern the Middle Burner — the body's "kitchen" — and the navel is right at their heart. When Yang collapses, when Cold penetrates deeply, when the digestive fire goes out, Shenque is the place to bring warmth back. Through Moxa here, one feeds the fire not just of digestion, but of life itself.
Location
Shenque (CV-8) is simply the centre of the navel — the umbilicus itself. It could not be easier to find.
Anatomy & fascia
The point is located at the centre of the navel (umbilicus). The underlying tissue includes the remnant of the umbilical ring, with the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava lying deeper in the abdomen.
Needling
⚠️ Shenque (CV-8) is contraindicated for needling. This is one of the very few points in Chinese medicine that must never be needled. The classical texts are unanimous on this point. It is treated exclusively with Moxa or other non-invasive methods.
The golden tip
The navel responds beautifully to simple home warmth. A warm (not hot) water bottle rested over the belly button for 10–15 minutes is deeply soothing for cold abdominal pain, loose stools or a general sense of cold and tiredness. If you have access to a Moxa stick, holding it a few centimetres above the navel — moving it gently in small circles — is the home version of one of Chinese medicine's most valued warming techniques. Do this until the skin feels pleasantly warm and pink. Never place anything that could burn directly on the skin, and never attempt to needle this point at home — or anywhere.
