A focused channel point on the outer thigh, Zhongdu (GB-32) clears Wind, Cold and Dampness from the leg and keeps the Gallbladder Meridian (GB) flowing. When pain, weakness or numbness grip the lower limb, this point helps restore movement and ease.
Contraindications
Zhongdu GB-32 is a safe point on the muscular outer thigh with no specific contraindications noted in the classical or modern sources. Observe standard depth guidelines and clean needling technique.
Name & story
The name 中渎 Zhongdu means "Middle Ditch" — zhōng is "middle" and dú is a narrow channel or ditch cut through the earth to carry water. Picture a ditch running along the side of the thigh, carrying Qi and Blood (Xue) down the leg. When that ditch becomes blocked — by Cold, Dampness, or Wind — pain and weakness follow. The point sits in the middle of the outer thigh, right along that channel pathway, and its job is to keep the ditch clear and the current flowing.
Point family & character
Zhongdu GB-32 belongs to the Gallbladder Meridian (GB), the Foot Shaoyang channel. It is a local channel point on the lateral thigh, situated 2 Cun below its neighbour Fengshi GB-31.
Five-element dynamics
The Gallbladder Meridian (GB) is the Yang channel of the Wood element — a channel associated with free-flowing movement, decision and the smooth spreading of Qi. When external pathogenic factors such as Wind, Cold or Dampness invade the lateral thigh, they obstruct the channel's natural flow, much like debris blocking a ditch. Zhongdu GB-32, sitting right in the middle of this pathway, addresses the obstruction directly — expelling the pathogens and restoring the smooth, free movement that Wood and the Gallbladder naturally desire.
Location
Find the outer side of the thigh. First locate Fengshi GB-31 — the point where the tip of the middle finger naturally touches when the arm hangs loosely at the side. Zhongdu GB-32 sits 2 Cun directly below Fengshi GB-31. A useful landmark: the distance from the greater trochanter prominence down to the popliteal crease is 19 Cun; GB-32 falls at the tender spot just proximal to where the upper three-quarters meets the lower quarter of that line.
Anatomy & fascia
The point lies on the lateral aspect of the thigh, in the region of the iliotibial band and the vastus lateralis muscle.
Needling
Insert the needle perpendicularly, or with a slight posterior oblique angle. The needle can also be directed obliquely, either proximally or distally along the channel.
Safe depth
The golden tip
If you feel tightness, aching or numbness along the outer thigh, you can find GB-32 by locating the spot where your middle fingertip rests on the outer thigh when your arm hangs relaxed, then measuring two finger-widths further down. Press or massage this area firmly in slow circles for 1–2 minutes on each side. Applying warmth — a warm pack or a gentle heat source — over the outer thigh in this region is especially helpful when the discomfort feels worse in cold or damp weather.
