The bright eye point of the Gallbladder channel. Guangming (GB-37) is the Luo Connecting point of the channel and its most celebrated action is clearing the eyes — its very name means "bright light". When vision dims, the eyes ache or itch, or the legs grow numb and weak, this is a point worth remembering.
Contraindications
GB-37 is a safe point with no special contraindications. Standard clean needling technique and attention to depth are all that is required.
Name & story
光明 Guangming means simply "Bright Light" — and the name tells the whole story. The Liver opens into the eyes, and Guangming is the Luo Connecting point linking the Gallbladder channel directly to the Liver channel. Think of it as a lantern held up on the outer shin: its light travels up through the connecting vessel straight to the organ that governs vision. When that inner light is dimmed — by Blood Deficiency, rising Wind, or stagnant Qi — the eyes go dry, painful or dull. Guangming is called upon to restore the brightness.
Point family & character
Guangming GB-37 belongs to the Gallbladder channel (GB). Its defining character is that of the Luo Connecting point of the channel — the branch point where the Gallbladder channel links internally to its paired partner, the Liver channel (LIV). This interior-exterior relationship is the source of its famous power over the eyes, since it is the Liver that "opens into the eyes".
Five-element dynamics
The Gallbladder and Liver both belong to the Wood element — the element of growth, direction and vision, both literal and inner. When Wood is flourishing, the eyes are bright and the mind is clear. When Wood is stagnant or deficient, the eyes suffer first. Guangming sits at the crossroads of the two Wood channels, and by needling it the practitioner can draw Qi and nourishment from the Gallbladder channel across the Luo vessel straight into the Liver — brightening the eyes from within, as its name promises.
Location
Find Guangming on the outer side of the lower leg, 5 Cun above the tip of the lateral malleolus (the outer ankle bone), along the line anterior to the fibula. A practical guide: measure five finger-widths straight up from the ankle prominence on the outside of the leg.
Anatomy & fascia
The point lies on the outer (lateral) aspect of the lower leg, in the region of the peroneus brevis and peroneus longus muscles, close to the anterior border of the fibula.
Needling
The needle is inserted perpendicularly (straight in).
Safe depth
The golden tip
If your eyes feel strained, dry or tired, try locating Guangming on the outside of the lower leg — five finger-widths above the outer ankle bone, just in front of the fibula. Firm, steady pressure or small circular massage for a minute or two on each leg can be soothing. For general leg fatigue or numbness along the outer shin, the same technique applies. It is a gentle and safe point for daily self-care.
