The court of the spirit, sitting at the very forehead. Shenting (GV-24) is one of the most important points for calming the mind, clearing the head and settling mental and emotional turbulence — where the Governing Vessel meets the scalp and, through it, the Shen itself.
Contraindications
Shenting (GV-24) is a safe scalp point with no special contraindications. Simply keep the needle shallow and subcutaneous, as the sources specify.
Name & story
The name 神庭 Shenting means "Spirit Court" or "Court of the Shen". Imagine a royal court — a quiet, ordered hall where the sovereign resides and where all matters of the realm are settled with clarity. In Chinese medicine, the head is the residence of the Shen, the spirit-mind, and this point sits right at its threshold, on the forehead just above the hairline. When the court is in chaos — when the mind is restless, fearful, or scattered — Shenting helps restore order and calm, as if the hall is brought back to stillness.
Point family & character
Shenting (GV-24) belongs to the Governing Vessel (GV), the great Yang channel that runs up the spine, over the head and down to the upper lip. It is a meeting point of the Governing Vessel with the Stomach Meridian (ST) and the Bladder Meridian (BL), giving it reach into both the digestive sphere and the great Yin-Yang axis of the back.
Five-element dynamics
The Governing Vessel is the "Sea of Yang Channels", gathering and distributing Yang Qi through the entire back and head. Yet Shenting, perched at the forehead, is a point that acts more on calming than on raising — it steadies the Yang of the head rather than stoking it. When Yang rises too strongly to the head, or when Wind disturbs the upper spaces, the mind loses its court-like stillness. Shenting steps in to quiet the uprising, settle the spirit and clear the sensory openings of the head.
Location
On the midline of the head, 0.5 Cun above the front hairline — directly above the midpoint of the forehead, on the same vertical line as the nose. If the hairline is unclear (receding or absent), it is located 3.5 Cun above Yintang (the point between the eyebrows) as a rough guide.
Anatomy & fascia
The point lies in the frontalis muscle of the forehead, in the midline of the scalp.
Needling
The needle is inserted horizontally (transversely) under the skin, directed either backward toward the crown or forward toward the nose.
Safe depth
0.3–0.5 Cun, subcutaneously.
The golden tip
To find Shenting, place one finger just above the centre of your front hairline — that is the point. Gentle, slow, firm pressure with a fingertip for 1–2 minutes, breathing calmly, can noticeably quiet an anxious or busy mind. Many people use it in the evening before sleep or whenever the head feels tense and cluttered. It pairs beautifully with a moment of stillness and slow breathing.
