The first point of the Liver channel and the spark that ignites it. Dadun (LR-1) is where the Liver Meridian (LR) begins its long journey upward through the body — a tiny point on the big toe with a surprisingly wide reach: from the genitals and lower abdomen all the way to the mind and the ethereal soul.
Contraindications
Dadun (LR-1) is a small, superficial point at the toe — it is generally safe. Use standard clean needle technique and respect the very shallow depth. Bleeding technique should only be applied by a trained practitioner.
Name & story
大敦 Dadun means "Big Mound" — a small but evocative image. The big toe, where the point lives, rises like a rounded mound from the foot. There is something fitting about this: a great river begins at a modest source, and the Liver Meridian (LR), one of the most powerful channels in the body, begins here at this quiet little mound. The name also hints at solidity and groundedness — qualities the Liver needs to do its work of keeping Qi moving freely.
Point family & character
Dadun (LR-1) is the Jing-Well point and the Wood point of the Liver Meridian (LR). As the Jing-Well, it is the point where the channel's Qi bubbles up from the earth like a spring — the source and beginning of the whole meridian. Being the Wood point of a Wood channel makes it a double expression of the Wood element, giving it a particular intensity and directness of action.
Five-element dynamics
The Liver belongs to the Wood element, and Dadun is the Wood point of that channel — "Wood upon Wood", the purest, most concentrated expression of Wood energy in the body. Wood in Chinese medicine is all about free movement, growth and spreading — like a tree pushing upward and outward. When Wood energy is blocked or excessive, Qi stagnates, pain and tension follow, and the mind grows irritable and restless. Dadun, as the channel's starting point and its Wood-within-Wood, has a special ability to unblock, move and regulate the Liver's Qi — especially in the lower body and genitals where the channel begins.
Location
Find the big toe. Dadun (LR-1) sits at the lateral corner of the base of the big toenail — on the side facing the second toe — at the junction where the nail meets the skin.
Anatomy & fascia
The point lies on the dorsal aspect of the big toe, at the base of the nail.
Needling
The needle is inserted perpendicularly or at a shallow angle. The point is also commonly bled — a quick prick to release a drop of blood — especially for acute conditions involving Heat or loss of consciousness.
Safe depth
0.1–0.2 Cun, or prick to bleed.
The golden tip
For mild lower abdominal tension, genital discomfort aggravated by cold, or hernia-type aching that comes and goes: find the outer corner of the big toenail (the side toward the second toe) and apply firm pressure or hold a warm moxa stick nearby for a few minutes. This is especially comforting when cold makes the discomfort worse. Always seek professional care for any serious or recurring condition.
