The sky-window of the neck. Tianchuang (SI-16) opens what is blocked in the throat and head — when Wind invades, the voice is lost, the ears ring, and the neck stiffens, this point clears the way like a window thrown open to the sky.
Contraindications
The neck contains major blood vessels; needling should be performed only by a trained practitioner with care to avoid the carotid artery and jugular vein. Keep to the stated shallow depth.
Name & story
The name 天窗 Tianchuang means 'Heavenly Window' or 'Window of Heaven' — a window that opens between the body below and the sky above. Picture a room gone stuffy and dark: sounds are muffled, the throat feels tight, the head is heavy. Opening a window lets the air rush in, the light return, and the stagnation clear. That is exactly what this point does for the neck and head: it opens the passages — for sound, for breath, for the free flow of Qi — and lets the heavenly clarity reach the sense organs once more.
Point family & character
Tianchuang (SI-16) belongs to the Small Intestine Meridian (SI). Its most important classification is that it is a Window of Heaven point — one of a special group of points along the neck that regulate the flow of Qi and Blood (Xue) between the body and the head, and are known for their strong influence on the throat, the voice, and the sense organs.
Five-element dynamics
The Small Intestine Meridian (SI) belongs to the Fire element — it is the Yang partner of the Heart. The channel travels up through the neck and around the ear, and it is along this pathway that Tianchuang (SI-16) sits. As a Window of Heaven point, its role is to ensure that the ascending and descending movements of Qi do not become blocked in the critical crossing-point of the neck. When Wind or Heat obstruct this passage, sounds become distorted, the throat closes, and the mind loses its clarity. By clearing that passage, SI-16 restores the natural communication between Earth and Heaven — between the body's lower energies and the clear, light functions of the head.
Location
Find the Adam's apple (level of LI-18), then move to the side and slightly back — Tianchuang (SI-16) is on the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, posterior and superior to LI-18, at the level of the Adam's apple.
Anatomy & fascia
The point lies in the neck, on the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
Needling
The needle is inserted perpendicularly.
Safe depth
Safe depth — 0.3–0.5 Cun.
The golden tip
For neck tension, a tight throat, or a sense of pressure in the head, gentle self-massage along the back edge of the large muscle running down the side of the neck (the sternocleidomastoid) in the area of SI-16 can bring some relief. Use the fingertips in small, slow circular movements for one to two minutes on each side. This is a sensitive area — work gently and avoid strong pressure on the large vessels of the neck.
