The first point of the San Jiao channel and a powerful emergency point. Guanchong (SJ-1) clears Heat from the upper body, opens the ears and throat, and revives consciousness — a small point on the ring finger with a surprisingly strong reach.
Contraindications
Guanchong (SJ-1) is a very superficial point with no deep structures at risk. It is generally safe; keep to the stated shallow depth. Bloodletting should be performed only by a trained practitioner.
Name & story
The name 关冲 Guanchong is usually translated as "Rushing Pass" or "Gushing Gate". The image is vivid: the character 关 (guan) means a gate or a strategic pass — like a mountain pass through which armies must move — and 冲 (chong) means to rush or surge forward. One classical explanation ties the name to the point's neighbourhood: it sits between the Heart channel's Shaochong (HT-9) and the Pericardium channel's Zhongchong (PC-9), and so it is called Guanchong — the rushing gate that stands between them. Another layer of meaning: as a Jing-Well point, it is the very source, the bubbling origin from which the channel's Qi begins its long journey up the arm.
Point family & character
Guanchong (SJ-1) belongs to the San Jiao channel. In character it is the Jing-Well point of the channel, and also its Metal point. Jing-Well points are the most distal points on the channels — tiny in location, but potent in action — classically used to clear Heat, revive consciousness and treat acute conditions.
Five-element dynamics
The San Jiao channel belongs to the Fire element, yet SJ-1 is its Metal point — the quality of Metal expressed within a Fire channel. Metal, in Chinese medicine, is associated with descending, clearing and the ability to cut through obstruction. When Fire builds up in the San Jiao — especially in the upper Jiao, affecting the head, ears, throat and eyes — this Metal point acts like a valve: it opens the gate, releases the congested Heat, and lets the channel flow freely again.
Location
Find the ring finger and go to its ulnar corner — the side closest to the little finger. The point sits at the junction of a line drawn along the ulnar border of the nail and a line along the base of the nail, approximately 0.1 Cun from the corner of the nail.
Anatomy & fascia
The point is located on the dorsal aspect of the ring finger, at the ulnar (little-finger side) corner of the nail.
Needling
The needle is inserted perpendicularly or obliquely, directed proximally (toward the hand). Alternatively, the point is pricked to bleed — bloodletting is in fact a very classical method here, especially in acute Heat conditions.
The golden tip
In a pinch — for a sudden sore throat, a buzzing ear, or a feeling of Heat rising to the head — firm pressure or fingernail stimulation at the ulnar corner of the ring fingernail can be applied. Press firmly for 30–60 seconds on both hands. This is a point best used in acute moments rather than for daily self-care, and professional treatment is recommended for persistent symptoms.
