A quiet but capable point on the upper arm. Xiaoluo (SJ-12) clears Heat, dissolves Phlegm, relieves pain in the neck and shoulder, and — true to its poetic name — seems to gently melt away what is stuck or heavy.
Contraindications
SJ-12 is a straightforward point on the fleshy back of the upper arm, with no special contraindications noted in the sources. Use standard clean-needle technique and observe the recommended depth.
Name & story
The name 消泺 Xiaoluo carries a beautiful image: 消 (xiāo) means "to melt" or "to dissolve", and 泺 (luò) refers to a Luo — a connecting vessel or a river. The sources describe it simply as "Melting Luo". Picture a river that has frozen or become blocked — and then imagine the warmth of spring quietly dissolving the ice, letting everything flow freely again. That is the spirit of this point: it loosens what has congealed — Phlegm, Heat, stagnation — and restores the natural movement of Qi through the channel.
Point family & character
SJ-12 belongs to the San Jiao channel (SJ), also known as the Triple Warmer or Triple Burner channel. It sits on the upper arm section of this Yang channel, between the elbow and the shoulder.
Five-element dynamics
The San Jiao channel belongs to the Fire element and governs the movement and transformation of Qi and fluids throughout all three burners of the body. When Heat accumulates or Phlegm congeals along the channel — especially in the upper burner — the flow through the arm and up into the neck becomes blocked and painful. Xiaoluo, sitting high on the upper arm, acts like a warm clearing wind: it dissolves that congealed Heat and Phlegm and restores smooth movement upward through the channel.
Location
Xiaoluo (SJ-12) is found on the outer aspect of the upper arm, on the line connecting SJ-10 (at the tip of the elbow) and SJ-14 (at the shoulder). It sits midway along the back of the upper arm, between SJ-11 below and SJ-13 above.
Needling
The needle is inserted perpendicularly (straight in).
Safe depth
Safe depth — 0.5–1.0 Cun.
Functions
Clears Heat and dissolves Phlegm; Clears and Invigorates the channel and collaterals; Relieves pain along the San Jiao channel; Dispels Wind and Heat.
Indications
Pain and stiffness in the neck, shoulder, and back of the arm. Headache. Pain in the eyes. Conditions associated with Phlegm and Heat accumulation along the San Jiao channel.
Point combinations
It is naturally paired with neighbouring points along the San Jiao channel — SJ-10 (Tianjing) below and SJ-13 (Naohui) above — when addressing pain and obstruction along the upper arm and into the neck and shoulder region.
Clinical spotlight
SJ-12 is a local point of real practical value for neck, shoulder, and upper arm pain — especially when Heat or Phlegm are part of the picture. The source material places it between two well-known neighbours: SJ-11 Qinglengyuan ("Cooling Gulf"), whose very name speaks of clearing Heat, and SJ-13 Naohui. The name "Melting Luo" itself is a clinical cue: think of this point whenever something along the channel feels congealed, heavy, or blocked by Heat.
The golden tip
To ease tension and aching along the back of the upper arm, find the midpoint on the outer surface of the upper arm between the elbow tip and the shoulder. Massage or press firmly with the opposite thumb for one to two minutes. This can help relieve local tightness, especially after long hours of holding the arms in one position.
