SP-12 Chongmen (冲门) — Acupuncture Point — Qiniusway
SP-12
冲门Chongmen
The Penetrating Door of the lower abdomen. Chongmen (SP-12) opens the way where Qi and Blood (Xue) are blocked — calming painful masses, relieving difficult urination, and quieting the rebellious rush of the Penetrating Vessel (Chong Mai) upward through the body.
Meridian
Spleen channel
Pinyin name
Chongmen
Contraindications
⚠️ Deep needling in a medial direction risks puncturing the femoral artery; deep needling in a lateral direction risks the femoral nerve. Always palpate the arterial pulse before needling, keep strictly to the stated depth of 0.5–1 Cun, and needle perpendicularly, just lateral to the pulse.
Name & story
The name 冲门 Chongmen means "Penetrating Door" — and both words carry weight. 冲 Chong is the same character as in the Penetrating Vessel (Chong Mai), the great sea of Blood (Xue) that surges through the core of the body. 门 Men means door or gate. So this point is quite literally the doorway where that powerful surging current can be calmed and regulated. When rebellious Qi rushes upward from the lower abdomen — causing breathlessness, pain or agitation — Chongmen is the door that can be opened to let the pressure out and restore the downward flow.
Point family & character
SP-12 belongs to the Spleen Meridian (SP). It is a Meeting point — where the Spleen Meridian (SP) and Liver Meridian (LR) cross — and it is also a point of the Yin Linking Vessel (Yin Wei Mai). This double meeting character gives it a broader reach than most local points: it can influence the Liver, the Spleen, and the extraordinary vessel that links and protects all the Yin channels.
Five-element dynamics
The Spleen belongs to the Earth element — the centre, the great transformer. But SP-12 sits at the very root of the channel, in the groin, close to where the Penetrating Vessel (Chong Mai) rises. This places it at the crossroads of Earth and the deepest currents of the body. The Penetrating Vessel is the "Sea of Blood (Xue)" and the "Sea of the twelve channels" — and when its Qi rebels upward rather than flowing smoothly, the whole body feels the turbulence. SP-12 stands at the door of that sea, able to redirect the current, move stagnant Qi, invigorate Blood (Xue), and drain what has accumulated in the lower abdomen.
Location
Find the upper border of the pubic symphysis — the bony joint in the midline just above the genitals. Measure 3.5 Cun laterally from Qugu REN-2 (which sits at the midline on that same upper border). You will feel the pulse of the femoral artery; Chongmen SP-12 sits in the small depression just lateral to that pulse, in the skin fold of the groin.
Anatomy & fascia
The point lies just lateral to the femoral artery, in the groove of the groin. The femoral nerve runs laterally and the femoral vein medially — making careful, perpendicular needling essential here.
Needling
The golden tip
The groin crease where SP-12 sits can be gently pressed or massaged — find the pulse of the femoral artery in the fold of the hip and apply light pressure just to its outer side. This can ease local tension, support circulation in the lower abdomen, and gently encourage smoother Qi flow. Because of the sensitive anatomy here, deep or firm self-massage is not recommended; keep the touch light and stop if it is uncomfortable.
For education only — not medical advice. Consult a qualified practitioner.
Insert the needle perpendicularly (straight in). Always palpate for the femoral artery pulse first and needle just to its lateral side — never toward the artery.
Safe depth
0.5 to 1 Cun.
Moxa, cupping & Tui Na
Gentle acupressure or Tui Na on the groin crease can help move local Qi Stagnation and ease pain when needling is not possible. Moxa may be applied with care to warm Cold accumulation in the lower abdomen.
Functions
Moves Qi and invigorates Blood (Xue). Subdues rebellious Qi of the Penetrating Vessel (Chong Mai). Resolves Dampness and benefits urination. Drains Damp-Heat from the lower Jiao. Alleviates pain in the lower abdomen and groin.
Indications
Abdominal pain, especially cold in the abdomen with fullness; abdominal masses (ji ju); shan disorder (hernial-type pain in the groin and lower abdomen). Pain of haemorrhoids. Foetal Qi rushing upward to the Heart causing difficulty in breathing. Difficult lactation. Difficult urination, retention of urine, painful urinary dysfunction (lin syndrome). Leucorrhoea. Heat in the body; atrophy disorder and painful obstruction of the lower limb. Sudden turmoil disorder.
Mind & spirit (Shen)
When the Penetrating Vessel (Chong Mai) — the deep sea of Blood (Xue) and the body's most primal current — surges out of control upward, the experience is not only physical. That rush of energy into the chest and Heart can feel like panic, agitation or a wave of dread rising from deep inside. By standing at the doorway of that current and redirecting its flow, Chongmen SP-12 can help bring a person back to stillness — quieting both the body and the unease that rides upward with the rebellious Qi.
Point combinations
With REN-2 (Qugu) and REN-3 (Zhongji) — for retention of urine and lower urinary difficulty. With local Spleen Meridian (SP) and Liver Meridian (LR) points — for abdominal masses and shan disorder. Its Yin Linking Vessel (Yin Wei Mai) connection links it in principle to Yin Wei Mai combinations for pain in the chest and heart region associated with rebellious Chong Mai.
Clinical spotlight
Chongmen SP-12 is a relatively specialised point, but one with a distinctive action that is hard to replicate elsewhere: its direct relationship with the Penetrating Vessel (Chong Mai). Maciocia summarises its key roles as moving Qi, invigorating Blood (Xue), subduing rebellious Chong Mai Qi and resolving Dampness in the Bladder — a compact but powerful profile. Its location right at the groin, lateral to the femoral artery, also makes it an effective local point for painful conditions of the inguinal area, hernial disorders and lower limb obstruction. The caution around nearby major vessels makes careful location and a measured needling depth especially important here.
