The quiet guardian of the Spleen's sinews and spirit. Shangqiu (SP-5) strengthens the Spleen, dries out Dampness, and looks after the joints and muscles — it is especially valued when the body feels heavy, stiff and waterlogged, or when the mind turns melancholy and brooding.
Contraindications
Shangqiu (SP-5) is a small and relatively delicate point near the ankle tendons — insert carefully and do not needle too deeply. No special systemic contraindications are noted in the sources.
Name & story
The name 商丘 Shangqiu carries a beautiful double meaning. 'Qiu' means a mound or hill — and the point does indeed sit in a small depression in front of and below the medial malleolus, like a hollow at the foot of a little hill. 'Shang' refers to the musical note of the Metal element in the ancient Chinese five-tone scale. It is said that each note resonates with a particular organ — and Shang, interestingly, is linked to the Lungs, yet here it appears on the Spleen channel, hinting at the deep interplay between the Earth and Metal elements (the Spleen nourishes the Lungs in the generating cycle). The name is a small reminder that Chinese medicine listens to the body the way a musician listens to a melody.
Point family & character
Shangqiu (SP-5) belongs to the Spleen Meridian (SP). It is the Jing-River point of the channel — the fourth in the classical five-shu sequence, associated with the Metal element. On an Earth channel, this makes it the Metal point of the Spleen — giving it a particular affinity for clearing and moving, cutting through Dampness and stagnation. The Spiritual Pivot specifically instructs that disorders at the 'yin within yang' level — meaning the sinews and bones — should be treated with the Jing-River points of the Yin channels, placing Shangqiu at the centre of treating damp painful obstruction.
Five-element dynamics
The Spleen belongs to the Earth element — the great transformer and transporter of the body, turning food and drink into Qi and Blood (Xue). When Earth is weak or overwhelmed, it stops transforming fluids properly, and Dampness pools inside: the body grows heavy, the joints swell, the mind clouds over with lethargy and gloom. Shangqiu, as the Metal point on the Earth channel, brings a drying and clarifying quality — Metal cuts, drains and descends. It both fortifies the Spleen to do its job and helps clear away what the weakened Spleen has allowed to accumulate. Earth feeds Metal in the generating cycle; when the Earth point is treated here, there is a quiet resonance between the two elements.
Location
Find the medial malleolus — the bony bump on the inside of the ankle. Shangqiu (SP-5) sits in the hollow just in front of and slightly below it, midway between the tip of the malleolus and the tuberosity of the navicular bone. Press gently and you will feel a small depression; that is the point.
Anatomy & fascia
The golden tip
If your ankles feel stiff and heavy, your digestion sluggish, or your mind foggy and prone to worry, try finding Shangqiu (SP-5) in the hollow just in front of and below the inner ankle bone. Press it gently with your thumb for one to two minutes on each side. Warming the area with a heat pack on cold, damp days can also be helpful, especially if joint stiffness worsens in wet weather. Keep to gentle pressure — the point is close to the bone and tendons.
