The great water-mover of the lower abdomen. Shuidao (ST-28) opens the body's fluid passages in the Lower Burner, clears obstruction from the uterus, and restores free flow where stagnation — of water, Qi or Blood (Xue) — has taken hold.
Name & story
The name 水道 Shuidao means "Water Passage" or "Water Road" — the channel through which water flows. It is a vivid, practical name: when the body's fluid pathways in the lower belly become blocked, water backs up — the bladder cannot empty, swelling appears, the lower abdomen feels full and uncomfortable. This point is the sluice gate that opens those passages again and lets the water move on. The name also hints at something wider: in Chinese medicine, the Lower Burner is compared to a drainage ditch — the organ responsible for letting used fluids leave the body. Shuidao is where you go when that drainage ditch is blocked.
Point family & character
Shuidao (ST-28) lies on the Stomach Meridian (ST), on the lower abdomen. It has no special classical category (no He-Sea, Xi Cleft or Yuan Source designation), but it is recognised in the classical literature as one of a trio of important water-regulating points whose names all contain the character 'shui' (water), marking it out as a specialist point for fluid metabolism in the Lower Burner.
Five-element dynamics
The Stomach Meridian (ST) belongs to the Earth element, and Earth governs transformation and transportation — including the movement of fluids through the body. ST-28 sits in the lower abdomen, right at the level of Ren-4 (Guanyuan), the gathering place of the body's original Qi and the root of the uterus and bladder. Here, the Earth channel reaches down into the deepest, most Yin part of the trunk, giving it direct access to the Lower Burner's fluid passages and the reproductive organs. This is almost exclusively a point for Excess patterns — not for building up and nourishing, but for clearing and opening what has become blocked.
Location
On the lower abdomen, 2 Cun lateral to the midline and 3 Cun below the navel, at the same level as Ren-4 (Guanyuan). A simple way to find it: locate the navel, measure three finger-widths straight down, then move two finger-widths out to either side.
Anatomy & fascia
The point lies in the lower abdomen, on the rectus abdominis muscle, approximately halfway between the midline and the palpable lateral border of that muscle at the level of the umbilicus.
Needling
The golden tip
For women who experience lower abdominal heaviness, bloating or menstrual discomfort with Cold signs (pain relieved by warmth, dark clotted blood), gently warming the lower abdomen in the area of ST-28 with a warm pack or moxa stick can help ease the obstruction. Find the point 3 Cun below the navel and 2 Cun to the side, and apply warmth or gentle circular massage for a few minutes. Always empty the bladder before any abdominal self-treatment. For urinary discomfort or lower abdominal fullness, acupressure on this point may bring some relief — but persistent symptoms should always be assessed by a practitioner.
