The last point on the Stomach channel — and one of its most powerful. Lidui (ST-45) clears Heat rising through the channel, calms a disturbed mind, and, like all Jing-Well points, can restore consciousness in emergencies. When the Stomach is on fire and the spirit is unsettled, this tiny point at the tip of the toe does remarkable work.
Contraindications
Lidui (ST-45) is a distal extremity point and is generally safe. Needling is very shallow. As with all Jing-Well points, bleeding technique should be performed by a trained practitioner with proper clean-needle protocol.
Name & story
The name 厉兑 Lidui carries a sharp, forceful feeling — 厉 (lì) means "severe" or "fierce", and 兑 (duì) is associated with the mouth and with metal, but also with opening and exchange. Together the name suggests a fierce opening, a forceful outlet — fitting for a point at the very tip of the second toe, the end of a long channel that begins at the face. It is as though all the Heat that has built up along the Stomach channel — from the face, through the chest and abdomen, all the way down the leg — finally has somewhere to escape.
Point family & character
Lidui (ST-45) belongs to the Stomach Meridian (ST). It is the Jing-Well point of the channel — the first point in the five-phase sequence, where the Qi of the meridian bubbles up like a spring at its source. As a Jing-Well point it carries the classic ability to restore consciousness and open the orifices of the Mind. It is the Metal point of the Stomach channel.
Five-element dynamics
The Stomach channel belongs to the Earth element, but Lidui ST-45 is its Metal point — and Metal, in the five-phase cycle, controls Earth (Metal drains Earth, keeping it from excess). This gives the point a natural talent for draining what is too full: too much Heat in the Stomach, too much fire rising up the channel to the face and head, too much agitation disturbing the Shen. The Jing-Well nature adds another layer — at the very tip of the channel, the Qi is concentrated and potent, and a small stimulus here creates a strong effect upstream.
Location
On the lateral side of the second toe (the toe next to the big toe), at the junction of the nail base and the skin — about 0.1 Cun from the corner of the toenail on the side facing the third toe.
Anatomy & fascia
The point lies on the lateral side of the second toe, at the corner of the nail.
Needling
The needle is inserted shallowly, almost perpendicularly. Alternatively, the point is pricked to bleed — bleeding is a classic method here, especially for clearing Heat and restoring consciousness. Direct moxa cones are also used when the aim is to drain Heart-Fire.
The golden tip
If you feel heat rising to your face after a heavy or spicy meal — flushing, restlessness, difficulty settling to sleep — you can press firmly on the outer corner of the second toenail for a minute or two. It will not replace treatment, but gentle stimulation of this tiny point can take the edge off the rising Heat. Keep nails clean and trim if you plan to use fingernail pressure here regularly.
