Eight Methods of Treatment (Ba-Fa)
treatment principles
The Eight Methods are the basic therapeutic strategies derived from a diagnosis based on the Eight Principles. These are the diaphoretic method (surface release), emetic, purgative (downward drainage), harmonizing, warming, clearing (heat), tonifying, and dispersing (elimination of stagnation and accumulations). The choice of method is determined by the location, nature, and severity of the syndrome: external conditions are released through sweating, internal heat is cleared, deficiency is replenished, and accumulations are dispersed. In practice, methods are often combined—for example, tonifying and clearing are performed simultaneously.
