Liver (gan)
physiology (organs)
The liver is responsible for the free and even flow of qi throughout the body, which is why it is closely linked to one’s emotional state. It also stores blood, regulating its distribution during physical exertion and at rest, and is connected to the tendons and eyes. When liver qi flows freely, one’s mood is balanced, and digestion and the menstrual cycle are harmonious. Stagnation of liver qi causes irritability and a sensation of fullness in the flanks; a rise in liver yang causes headaches and dizziness; and a deficiency of liver blood causes dry eyes and spasms.
