Body Fluids (Jin-ye)
physiology (substances)
Jin-ye is the general term for all normal bodily fluids other than blood: saliva, sweat, tears, gastric and intestinal juices, synovial fluid, and others. “Jin” refers to lighter, more fluid substances that moisturize the skin and muscles; “ye” refers to thicker substances that nourish the joints, brain, and body cavities. These fluids are produced from food by the spleen and stomach and distributed by the lungs, kidneys, and triple burner. They moisturize tissues, lubricate joints, and are a component of blood. A deficiency leads to dryness, while stagnation leads to dampness, phlegm, and edema.
