Raw Material Processing (pao-zhi)
pharmacology (processing)
Pao-zhi is a traditional method of processing medicinal raw materials before use. Its objectives are to reduce toxicity (for example, by boiling aconite for an extended period), to alter or enhance the effects (roasting with honey makes herbs more tonifying and moisturizing; charring enhances the hemostatic effect), to facilitate storage and preparation, and to eliminate unpleasant odors or irritating effects. Methods include cleaning and cutting, heating (roasting, calcination, steaming), and treatment with liquids (wine, vinegar, salt water, ginger juice, honey). The same plant can have different indications depending on how it is processed—which is why it is important to specify the form in the reference guide (for example, “processed” fu-zi).
