The spleen is the center of digestion and the “source” of acquired qi and blood. It governs “transport and transformation”: it extracts the pure substance from food and directs it upward to form qi and blood. The spleen also keeps blood within the vessels and “holds” the organs in place. A healthy spleen promotes a good appetite, strong muscles, and well-formed stools. When it is weak, fatigue, bloating, and loose stools occur, and the inability to retain blood leads to bleeding and prolapse.
