Kidneys (Shen)
physiology (organs)
The kidneys store jing—“essence”—the foundation of growth, development, reproduction, and aging, as well as the root of yin and yang throughout the body. They regulate fluid metabolism, “receive” qi (linked to deep breathing), and are connected to the bones, bone marrow, and brain, “opening” to the ears. Strong kidneys mean steady development, healthy bones, good hearing, and reproductive vitality. A deficiency of kidney yin causes hot flashes and dryness; a deficiency of yang causes sensitivity to cold and weakness; and depletion of jing leads to premature aging and weak bones.
