Pattern Differentiation (Bian Zheng)

Pattern differentiation is the core diagnostic process of gathering signs and symptoms and analysing them to identify the underlying pattern of disharmony. Treatment in TCM is directed at this differentiated pattern rather than at the disease name alone, expressed as 'bian zheng lun zhi' — determining treatment based on pattern identification.
