Heart (xin)
physiology (organs)
In TCM, the heart is considered the “ruler” of the organs. It governs the blood and blood vessels, ensuring its circulation throughout the body. But its main function is that it “houses the spirit” (shen): it is responsible for consciousness, thinking, memory, and sleep. A healthy heart manifests as a clear mind, restful sleep, and a healthy complexion; its condition is “revealed” on the tongue. A deficiency of blood or heart yin leads to palpitations, insomnia, and anxiety, while heart heat causes agitation and restlessness.
