A Holistic Perspective (zheng-ti guan-nian)
theory foundations
A holistic perspective is a fundamental characteristic of TCM thinking. First, the body is viewed as a unified whole, in which organs, tissues, qi, blood, and emotions are interconnected, and a localized symptom reflects the state of the entire system. Second, a person is inseparable from nature (“tian-ren-xiang-yin”): climate, time of day and season, and geography all influence physiology and disease, so treatment takes the season and environment into account. It follows that a diagnosis is based not on an isolated symptom but on the “pattern” (syndrome) of the whole person, and treatment aims to restore overall balance rather than eliminate a single symptom.
